Good food 101

What is good food?  Most people think they have a pretty good idea but when I nut it out with many, I realise there is much to be learnt by a lot of people, hence me talking about it now.

Our body breaks down foods to an energy source it can effectively use. These energy sources are:

  • Carbohydrates are broken down to glucose
  • Proteins are broken down to amino acids
  • Fats are broken down to fatty acids

We need all three energy sources but…

If we have too much of any one, our body stores the excess as fat and we either get fat and/or develop diabetes or  some other type of chronic disease.

The more processed these foods are, the easier it is for our body to absorb, leading our body to likely absorb too much, having to store the excess as fat.

The easiest energy source our body uses is glucose (from carbohydrates). The problem with most societies of the world these days, is they over process these carbohydrates for ‘convenience’ leading to too much consumed, and excess stored as fat.

Think of it this way, you can easily drink a glass of apple juice which may contain 4-6 apples, but it is unlikely you can eat 4-6 apples in one go.  The processing enables us to consume more than our body needs.

So, as an absolute basic:

  • Avoid processed foods.
  • Avoid or reduce anything that has a barcode.
  • Eat healthy fats (again, not processed).
  • Eat healthy protein (not processed).

There is much more to nutrition than this, but by using the above advice as a basic, you WILL be much healthier.
