Core Strength? NO, NO, NO!
Jan 08, 2023Well, not yet anyway!
When it comes to improving the health and function of your core muscles, it is important to understand the difference between core stability and core strength. These two concepts are often conflated, but they are actually quite distinct from one another.
Core stability refers to the ability of your core muscles and the proprioceptive ability of your spinal joints to maintain stability while you move. This is important for maintaining proper form in movement as well as protecting your spine from injury. Think of it like the foundation of a house - if your foundation is solid and stable, you can build upon it with confidence.
On the other hand, core strength refers to the ability of your core muscles to generate force and power in movement. This is important for activities like lifting heavy objects or performing athletic movements. However, it's important to note that you can't build strength on a foundation that is unstable.
To use the analogy of the wise person and the foolish person: think of core stability as the rock upon which the wise person builds their house. This rock is solid and stable, providing a strong foundation for the rest of the house. The foolish person, on the other hand, builds their house upon the sand. This sand is unstable and shifts with the wind, causing the house to crumble.
In the same way, if you try to build core strength without first establishing a foundation of core stability, you are setting yourself up for failure. Your core muscles and joints will be unable to generate the force and power you need, and you will be more prone to injury.
This is why it is so important to focus on core stability before moving on to core strength work. Especially when recovering from injury or trying to break free from the cycle of back pain.
